For the 25th consecutive year, the 3M MATHCOUNTS Invitational was held to provide a fun and competitive outlet for area school students to test their mathematics skills.
This year’s competition, consisted of 16 teams competing at Valley’s Twin Rivers YMCA Community Center.
Sixth through eighth-grade students invited to compete in this year’s Invitational come from the following schools/school districts: Arlington, Alfonza Davis, Blair, the Catholic Home School Association of Omaha, DC West, Elkhorn Grandview, Elkhorn Middle School, Elkhorn Ridge, Elkhorn Valley View, Gretna, North Bend, Saint Vincent de Paul, St. Patrick’s Elkhorn and Yutan, said Samia Azar, 3M process engineer specialist.
The invitational consists of four rounds: the sprint round, target round, team round and countdown round. The sprint and target rounds are individual challenges where students could gain points for themselves, and for their given teams. The team round consists of the participating teams working together to solve 10 problems in 20 minutes. This activity promotes team work and team thinking.
The countdown round is a fast-paced oral competition for the top scoring person from each of the 14 teams. Participants compete against each other and the clock to see who could solve problems the fastest. After the conclusion of the final round, points are added up and eventually one individual, and one team, will be named a winner.
Congratulations Andrew for winning the Gretna middle school Highest scoring team member at the Math Counts Competition!

MathCounts is a national enrichment competition program that promotes middle school mathematics. The program is one of the country’s largest and most successful education partnership involving volunteers, educators, industry sponsor (3M in Valley, is the area sponsor for Gretna) and students.
MathCounts has a written and oral round, as well as individual and team components; problems focus on the 6th through 8th grade standards of the National Council of Teachers in Mathematics.
MathCount teams advance through a school, chapter and state competition until the final 224 students are selected to advance to the MathCounts national competition held each May in Washington D.C.
